The Loch Ba Ring Dyke Walk (Part II)

Details of the walk: (see map below)

The walk is described starting at the side of Loch Ba accessible from the car park at the end of the estate road and then following it in a counter-clockwise direction. The dyke is very obvious at this point, but less so as one proceeds. Stopping points of interest are labelled A through X and are marked on the map below:

  1. Park the car at the little car park at the end of the estate road, just at the bend in the road near the bridge
  2. Walk up the side of the loch until you reach Coille na Sroine (A)
  3. Head up the hillside to the dyke, (B)
  4. Follow the contact up till you come to a chasm (dyke runs through here) (C)
  5. Keep heading upwards, try walking along the top of it
  6. Finally reach the summit of the dyke at the back of Beinn a Ghraig (D)
  7. Follow it till it peters out at Beinn nan Gabhar (E) Note: this could be a return point - by either descending the way you came, or by dropping down towards Scarisdale Point.
  8. Follow the grassy slopes to An Cruachan (F)
  9. Drop down to Glen Clachaig (G)
  10. Pick up the intrusion again in the River Clachaig (H) Note: this is also a convenient return point, by heading down Glen Clachaig and back to Loch Ba
  11. Head up to the bealach between Cruachan Dearg and Cruachan Beag (I)
  12. Drop down to Allt na h-Eilgeir - try to find the intrusion in the stream (J)
  13. Cut across the slopes of Beinn Chaisgidle (Centre 2 - yes, it says Centre 1 on the map, but at the time of the Survey, there were only 2 centres known about) (K) Note: this is another point to head back from, down Glen Cannel and then back along the side of Loch Ba
  14. Go to Allt a' Choire Bhain (capital exposure according to the memoir!) (L)
  15. Dyke follows a forested, boggy, tusocky area - avoid this, stay uphill. (M)
  16. Cut through to the bothy at Tomsleibhe (N)
  17. Follow the road to the bridge over the R Forsa (O) Note: this could be a return point by heading straight down Glen Forsa -a long way back however as you have to go through Salen
  18. Cross the bridge, pick up the intrusion in the Allt Mor (P)
  19. Head up to the corner of the plantation and continue above tree line
  20. Look for intrusion in the small streams (Q)
  21. Cut down at end of forest plantation to the R Forsa (R)
  22. Cross the R Forsa near the new gate
  23. Walk up to the main estate track Note: Final point to cut the trip early - down Glen Forsa and back via Salen
  24. Go down the glen a bit, then head up the hill to Beinn na Lus (S)
  25. Find the ring dyke on the summit (T)
  26. Follow it over Na Bacanan (U)
  27. Head down to Sron nam Boc (V)
  28. Drop down to Loch Ba (W)
  29. Head out along the shore of the loch back to Knock (X)
