This page is the starting point for the
geological information pages. From here you can
navigate to maps, excursions, specific geological
sites and many more data pages.
The
links should be self explanatory. If you have any
comments, feel free to get back to us via the
Contact page.
But
first a quotation:
`It
may safely be maintained that Mull includes the most
complicated igneous centre as yet accorded detailed
examination anywhere in the world' Bailey et al.,
1924, Memoir of the Geological Survey of Great
Britain, Scotland, HMSO, Edinburgh, 1924. I
have set up a page called Research History which
gives a timeline for the various workers who have
surveyed and researched the geology of these
islands. Click here,
or see below.
General Descriptions
Geological descriptions, basic and more advanced
which give an overall picture of the islands. Some
of these are links to other sites
Locality Notes
Geological log book type notes and pictures taken in
various sites round Mull and Iona. These are not
excursion guides per se, but simply things of
interest noted by the author, with photographs.
Geological Maps
Various geological maps compiled from different
sources. Also web links to maps of the area that can
be found on the web
Classic Sites
There are many world famous sites to be found in
these islands. These pages list them together with
photographs and instructions on how to get to them.
Note there may be an overlap with some of the
"Locality Notes" above
Rock and Mineral Gallery
One of the project objectives of mullgeology.com is
to build up a definitive geological collection of
the rocks, minerals and fossils that are to be found
in these islands. This project is at a very early
stage at the time of writing Summer 2006 and
should take several years. The gallery is also
found as a link from the Galleries
page
Articles
Various articles and papers written by others, but
included here for reference. Most of these are web
links to other sites. These are articles which are
easily accessible on the Web - most have been
tracked down in the process of the authors own
research using search engines.
Research History
The history of geological exploration and research
into this area. Also includes a bibliography
compiled from the various memoirs and other sources.
It also contains a list of published papers which
are found in various peer-reviewed journals. Many of
these are available online, but DO require a
subscription to see more than just an abstract.
Journals like these contain the most up to date
published research.
Mull
and Iona Rock List
A list of all the
rock types to be found in Mull and Iona
